Wichita City Council banned camping anywhere in the city of Wichita....meaning Homeless move on!

Greetings,

Today the Wichita City Council banned camping anywhere in the city of Wichita, an effort they say so they can get the police involved with fining them places to stay.

The article in the Wichita Eagle make’s it sound good BUT, there we are back to the same thing, there just are not enough beds in Wichita for the women, men, or families, yes they have a housing first program, but in that program there are guidelines that not all can meet.

So when they tell them you cannot camp or sleep here just move on then just where are they supposed to go? I have talked with the Wichita police HOT team that deals with the homeless and they clearly do not have a place for everyone and women there simply is no solution right now. Move on to where one would ask….we will see.

They say by the law give’s them a way to try and get the homeless a place to stay, the big word here is try…..?

Do not get me wrong I do believe the Wichita Police are trying there best but resources are limited so it is a big problem for them..

The Solution for Wichita at least is a new 24/7 overflow shelter something we have been advocating for, how long or what gives me the knowledge, we started our 14 year caring for the homeless and poor in Wichita this June, 2013.

One question that also arise out of this is if they cannot find a place for the people to go then what does that mean? They cannot sleep outside so what leave  town? What if they have lived in Wichita all there lives and just hit on hard times?

In the mean time we are still trying to get the woman’s Overflow done by trying to get Wichita to support “Mercy” the woman’s overflow…..

City Council adopts ordinances banning camping, defecation on public property

Wichita Eagle 06.12.2013

Ordinances that ban camping and defecating on public property were approved Tuesday by the Wichita City Council, moves that police say will open the door for them to find the homeless services and a place to live.

The prohibition also includes defecation on private property in view of others.
Previously, the city only had ordinances preventing camping in parks and urinating on public property or on private property in view of others.

Police had requested the ordinances so its homeless outreach team could approach homeless people and try to get them the help they need or a place to live. Full article here
